What is zen?

Zen: a state of calm attentiveness in which one’s actions are guided by intuition rather than by conscious effort; having or showing qualities, such as meditative calmness and an attitude of acceptance.

These times, more than ever, call for finding zen in our everyday life. While we may be getting used to wearing a mask, not traveling, or staying home, our mental health is taking a toll; subconsciously or consciously.

As I have been writing this, awful events around our country and now the world, have been unfolding. I am deeply saddened by what is happening and I can’t wrap my brain around the injustices. I can’t grasp why someone would look at another human and think he is superior purely based by the color of the skin.

We need to be kind to one another. Support one another. We need to help and nurture and bring peace to one another. We shouldn’t be at war with one another, when this world has so much beauty and there is so much that we can offer to our fellow humans.

I also know that this is easier said than done, but I do know that it all starts within. When we are at peace, we bring peace to those around us. When we are zen, we make those around us zen too. As they say, we can’t take care of others if we don’t take care of ourselves.

What can we do on a daily basis to give ourselves a peace of mind, even if it is just for a few short moments out of the day?

One thing we can do is surround ourselves with peace, love, happiness, support, kindness, and make sure we give the best of ourselves to others.

One way I like to do that is with this Somewhat Zen. Think Ipsy, but for a peaceful core.

This box, not only allows us to support a fellow warrior and her business, but it ensures we brighten and zen our day, each and every day.

May’s box

Somewhat Zen is a monthly subscription box that I am absolutely in love with. Just like any monthly subscription, each month, the founder Roechelle and her awesome Zen crew, personally selects items that will bring you enlightenment. This box is a labor of love for her because her passion is about spreading messages on maintaining proper mental health, positivity, Zen, and a positive self-image.

In her past, she suffered with mental health issues and knows exactly how it feels to go through that. Her hope, and mine as well, is that you will find some form of self-therapy in the items and contents delivered to your doorstep every month.

Another piece of awesomeness is that she donates a portion of proceeds from each sale to The National Alliance on Mental Health (www.nami.org); what an amazing show of support!

This is how the subscription works:

  • One Month
  • Three Months
  • 6 Months
  • 12 months

One month is $30 dollars or save $10 on the other subscription tiers.

She has also given me a coupon code for to share with all of you! Use code ZENBOX and that will take $15 off of your subscription! How zen is that?!

In May’s box, I received the following:

  1. Handmade “I am Awesome” 80 page Journal Zine

Many of the items are handcrafted by her humble crew of Zen-warriors, in the hopes that these items inspire you to simply slow down and just be!
